Emma Butterworth Architects is a New Farm based architectural practice exploring stories through design. EBA was founded in 2024 by Emma Butterworth, and it operates in the fields of writing, architecture & interiors (residences, retail, hospitality) and art.

Originally from Launceston, Tasmania, Emma studied architecture and design at the Queensland University of Technology. Her career highlights include: receiving a commercial project commendation with Those Architects for ‘Goodhope’, her work in New York City and San Francisco, and her work with the community, including mentoring younger female architects.

Emma starts each project through story, building an empathic connection with the user that will eventually interact with her designs. The story is the basis of each project which always keeps her on track and accompanies her whole design process: thinking of spaces or objects in relation to people and their stories.

EBA is a constant experiment, exploring ways to move towards better design and architecture. EBA thinks about and explores worlds adjacent to architecture, creating links between architecture and adjacent fields such as writing, fashion and art, finding unexpected connections between the familiar and the unexplored.
